Ever since ancient times, marble was extracted from the Apuan Alps. However, it’s not the only place in the world where marble can be found. And throughout the years, the extraction techniques used to quarry marble and granite have also evolved. Marble is a mate-morphic rock which is formed when limestone is exposed to high pressures and temperatures. It forms under such conditions because calcite forming the limestone recrystallizes, forming a dense rock.
Granite, however, takes a different approach to being quarried than marble does. Due to the structure of granite, it isn’t quarried by blasting, as this would shatter the material. Instead two methods are used:
These techniques are used to cut the granite out of the quarry. By drilling vertical holes about an inch apart to the desired depth, the granite that remains between the holes is then removed by secondary drilling.
